Here’s what I’m thinking. First, of all let me tell you why the original pilot of ‘The Thriving Coaches Blueprint’ had that mysterious name, “Project Glasswing”. “Glasswing” is the name of a species of South American butterfly, but with something very unusual about it. Its wings are TRANSPARENT, like glass, but with an opaque border and a couple of thin dark lines running between the different sections of the wing (imagine an old-fashioned, leaded-glass window and you’ll get an idea). Like all butterflies, the Glasswing starts out as a caterpillar. Then, at a certain point in its life, it receives a “signal” from deep within itself letting it know it’s time to transform. It sheds its skin to reveal a chrysalis, and the process of transformation begins, and what an amazing transformation it is!

The body of the caterpillar literally starts disintegrating, dissolving into kind of “caterpillar soup”, and tiny imaginal cells that have been contained within the caterpillar its whole life start to connect up. The process can take anywhere from a few weeks to an entire season. As the imaginal cells keep connecting, the butterfly literally starts emerging from the caterpillar soup. Finally, when its transformation is complete, the Glasswing breaks out of its cocoon and flies free, with the sunlight shining through its invisible wings (they live in South America, so sunshine’s a pretty good bet).

I’ve been fascinated with the process of metamorphosis and transformation, and marvelled at the existence of imaginal cells ever since I first read about them. In fact, one of the reasons I find it so compelling is because of the transformations I’ve been through myself, and the transformations I consistently see my clients go through. Over the past 16 years, I’ve supported thousands of coaches, therapists and change-workers in undergoing their own personal transformations, with many of them going on to make a great living coaching others.
