1. A quote I’m resonating with
This one’s from author Robin Hanson during his recent interview with Sam Harris:
“We have this part of our brain that’s all the time thinking about what we’re doing and trying to explain why we’re following good motives. And that’s in a sense the conscious part of your mind. You are the conscious part of your mind and you aren’t necessarily the one in charge of your mind. There’s this idea that instead of being the president or the king, you’re the press secretary. You don’t actually know why you do things but you’re supposed to make up a good excuse. And you do that. You’re constantly looking at what you’re doing and asking yourself, ‘What would be a good explanation for this thing I’m doing.’ And you’re good at that, you’re good at coming up with excuses for what you’re doing. But you don’t actually know what you’re actually doing, but you don’t realise that you don’t know.”
2. Raw talent, and so much stillness you could hear a pin drop
Jo Munday is one of the people I most love listening to when she shares her understanding with people. She has a stillness and presence that captivates your attention. On the occasions where she’s spoken on the Clarity Coach Training (Jo is a Clarity Coach and Trainer), the room went so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
Jo brought that same quality of presence and connection to the project of making a video about the Clarity Life Transformation Retreat we do each year with Jan and Chip Chipman.
If you want to get a taste of Jo’s talents as a film-maker (and a pre-beard version of me) you can watch the video here: https://www.jamiesmart.com/clarity-retreat/
3. This week’s glimpse of the future
This just in – online dating is actually CHANGING the nature of society.
4. The 17 most under-rated horror movies of the 21st century
I love horror movies (guilty pleasure) and I’ve only seen 6 of these. The remaining 11 should meet my horror cinema needs for the rest of 2018.
5. This week’s 3 minute miracle
I had The House of Love’s eponymous 1990 album on heavy rotation for much of the early 90s. Here’s a beautiful version of their song ‘The Beatles and the Stones’ from a John Peel session. Lovely! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvj1qPDe-1g
That’s it for this week!
