1. A quote I’m resonating with this week
Today I’m in Zurich, speaking at the Ignite business conference https://www.ignite-movement.com/conference-2018 at the University of St Gallen on the subject of purpose. Then on Friday, I’m in the southwest of England speaking at the Resilient Young Minds conference (the in-room places are sold out, but you can still get a live-stream ticket if you want to join us – book your place here https://www.tickettailor.com/events/theclayfactory/185546). I’m going to be painting a vision for the future, and I’m reminded once again that the principles Sydney Banks discovered represent a paradigm shift; a genuine revolution for the field of psychology. To get a sense of what a true paradigm shift really means, I’m reflecting on this passage from John Waller’s excellent book, The Discovery of the Germ: Twenty Years That Transformed The Way We Think About Disease.
“… a real revolution is something that transforms major aspects of our world and the way we see it. The extraordinary albeit bloodless, scientific revolution that took place between 1880 and 1900 provides us with a paradigmatic example. For in this short space of time, medicine underwent perhaps its greatest ever transformation. In just 20 years, the central role of germs in producing illness was for the first time decisively demonstrated and Western doctors abandoned misconceived ideas about the causes and nature of disease that had persisted, in one form or another, for thousands of years.”
Think about that… a real revolution is something that transforms major aspects of our world and the way we see it. That’s what I believe the principles behind clarity represent, and why my team and I are so passionate about sharing them with the world, hence…
Our vision: To inspire and educate a generation to experience lives of clarity, resilience and wellbeing.
What we believe: the most valuable thing a person can discover is the truth of who they really are.
In support of this, we’ve got lots of exciting new projects and ventures in the pipeline for the year ahead, and this week’s Get Clarity Podcast with Dr Bill Pettit is one of them…
2. Schizophrenia, Stress and Depression: 1 Cause & 1 Cure with Dr Bill Pettit
This week’s episode of the Get Clarity Podcast is a deep-dive into the whole domain of mental illness and mental health, with board-certified psychiatrist Dr Bill Pettit.
Dr Pettit has seen first-hand in many thousands of cases just what a huge impact an understanding of the principles behind clarity can have in a person’s life, you see: Bill has shared the principles behind clarity with people who have very severe clinical diagnoses, often with seemingly miraculous results. So much so, that I went out to my tribe before doing this interview, and got people to submit their question for me to discuss with Bill, so we covered topics as diverse as schizophrenia, depression, panic attacks, stress and anxiety, and even psychedelics.
Our conversation ran for nearly two hours, and this is one you may want to listen to more than once, because there’s so much in it, so here’s the episode.
3. This week’s glimpse of the future
This is a big one – four ways that AI are going to impact the financial job market https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2018/09/4-ways-ai-artificial-intelligence-impact-financial-job-market
4. A book I love
The book I quoted from in part 1 of this week’s article, John Waller’s Discovery of the Germ is one of the most gripping books I’ve ever read (I know – I’m weird). Here’s why: it offers one of the only examples of a paradigm shift that had immediate, real-world effects on the lives of the people who lived through it. As Waller points out in the introduction, real revolutions are extremely rare, and profoundly transformative. They’re almost always sparked by insight and realisation, for instance:
– Semmelweis’ insight that there was something invisible on doctors’ hands and instruments
– Newton’s insight into universal gravitation
– Lavoisier’s insight into the vital part oxygen plays in combustion
– Sydney Banks’ insight into the principles behind psychology
If you want to get a glimpse of what it’s like to live through a genuine paradigm shift, I strongly recommend Discovery of the Germ https://www.amazon.co.uk/Discovery-Germ-Revolutions-Science-S/dp/1840465026 But if you want to actually experience living through a genuine paradigm shift, I encourage you to get a deeper understanding of the principles behind clarity (there are a number of ways you can explore them with me listed below). This is actually happening right now, and I feel so grateful to be part of it.
5. This week’s 3 minute miracle
I usually can’t stand musical comedy, but when I saw the first episode of Flight of the Conchords first series, I was sold. The first track from episode one gives you a taste of what you’re in store for with the entire first series. It’s brilliantly observed, very funny, and an honest-to-goodness earworm. Here’s the extraordinary Part Time Model https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89zOtd6VAiU
That’s it for this week!
